My Campaign
Campaign Slogan: Bring Back the Lats
For those of you unfamiliar with such things as lats, it is the word for latrine. In the retro days of camp we used to use these to relieve ourselves. As camp is completely under canvas, the system used to work like this:
1. The farmer came and dug a big pit.
2. We put up 2 tents - the girls and boys 'lat tents'.
3. Inside each tent were cubicles formed of pieces of wood screwed together cleverly with doors.
4. Inside each cubicle was a bucket with a seat and in the bottom was a blue liquid.
5. Toilet paper and other such items were located in an ice-cream tub.
6. Every day, the tent officers who were on the duty called 'Site & Hygiene' carried the full lats to the pit, emptied them out, gave them a good powerwash with the hosepipe, and re-filled them with blue stuff. This was called 'charging' the lats.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Lats
+ They were emptied every day.
+ They were contained in wooden cubicles with gaps at the bottom and at the top; the wooden cubicles were more than sufficient for privacy and allowed any smells to be ventilated out.
+ It was a character and team building exercise to empty out the lats. No longer do we have such a privilege.
+ It was possible to work out which lats were the emptiest and use those.
- It was possible to see all that had been left by those who had visited that particular lat since they had been cleaned.
- Stealage of toilet paper from underneath the cubicle door was rumoured to have happened in the boys lats.
Unfortunately, a few years ago, health and safety got onto us, which meant replacing these wonderful, beneficial lats with items that are affectionately known by some as the 'Pump & Dumps'. They are self-contained porta-loos provided and maintained by an outside company. The chance of visual contact and any possible accidental skin contact with the waste was cut dramatically. Some may consider this a positive step, however I feel it is less hygenic and less sanitary to have these regulation Pump & Dumps.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Pump & Dumps
+ Supposedly no visual contact with the waste products.
- Pump & Dumps are self-contained units and therefore ventilation is a real issue. This problem is made worse if the ventilation tube breaks and vents into the unit itself.
- Unlike lats, these units are emptied only twice during camp. The build-up of waste products is unbearable.
- Visual contact with waste occurs if and when the unit becomes full.
- Visual contact with waste occurs in the form of skidmarks on the entry flap. Some people just don't know how to pump THEN dump.
- It is possible to tip one of these units over. Not good when someone is in it.
In short BRING BACK THE LATS.

Well hello there readers. Time to sit down and blog I feel. Even though I should be getting on with stuff I need to do - like planning my move back to the big city.
Anyway. Since getting back from camp I've been relaxing and spending most of my time on the sofa watching the Discovery channel. I think I'm addicted. And I might ask my dad to record some of my favourite programmes and post them to me! I particularly like "How it's made" and "Mythbusters" and in the evenings "Forensic Detectives" is pretty good. I like it because it's not about people moaning or buying antiques or houses. It's mostly about science - okay, I admit, it's fairly Americanised science but it's far better than the BBC daytime tv anyway.
I've discovered that I don't have much to do now that I'm not in uni or preparing for camp. In fact, I have nothing to do apart from organise my stuff. And I'm not very good at that because I have so much of it. Ah well.
Money situation is dire and I shouldn't really be galavanting off in my car to visit friends. But never mind. I'll have to avoid shops completely for the next 10 years I think. Unfortunately this is not possible as I have to buy food for myself. Maybe I'll just live on chips from the shop next door and veg from the veg shop down the road. Apart from protein (and I'm sure I can find a vegetable that supplies plenty of that) I think that combination of food should be sufficient for all my dietary needs...
This entry is long enough I think. Adios amigos.

I miss camp!
Why can't I go to a wedding in ripped jeans and a t-shirt? It's just not fair.
I've just come back from a Christian convention and a Christian camp. They were both really good but extremely tiring. We had a nit infestation on camp. Wasn't very pleasant for anyone. I was one of the fortunate ones who didn't catch them.
Now I have many letters to write before I go off on my travels again. I wanted to go see many friends but they're all on holiday. I'll probably end up at my uni home in the end. Which will be nice since I've only been in the flat once for about 5 minutes. Although it will be weird going back to the city since I've been out of normal life for a while at camp. I miss camp life!
